(10) San Jose Mercury News:

On this homepage, we like the simple layout of the article headlines and descriptions. I also like the inclusion of the box with blog headlines, user photos, forum titles, and podcasts toward the top of the homepage. The site loads a bit slowly and is a little light on the features, but it does have all the core elements of a good site.

(6) Knoxville News Sentinel:

I’m not sure a newspaper website could look any better than this one. When we talk about de-cluttering sites and making them look “clean”, this is what we mean.

(5) Denver Post:

The homepage of this site isn’t much to write home about, but registering with the site automatically gives you your own blog and your own photo gallery for uploading and sharing photos. When you add in some interesting political features, including a voter’s guide and a poll for picking candidates and combine that with alternative content views, internal and external bookmarking features, as well as links from stories to relevant materials, you’ve got all the ingredients necessary to build a great website.

(4) Houston Chronicle:

We like the non-newspaperish feeling that this homepage exudes. It’s significantly different from any other newspaper site. Chron.com offers its users interactive features such as comments and blogs, has a great RSS system made available right on the homepage, and looks good while doing it.

(3) USA Today:

Social networking. Social networking. Social networking. Did I mention that this site has the most robust social networking features out of any of the newspaper websites we researched? Oh yeah. And this site has social networking.

(2) Washington Post:

Not only do we like the design and the navigability of the Post’s website, but we really love its database applications, which provide interesting tidbits of information difficult to find elsewhere. The Post’s website has been a huge success, and is one of the best examples of newspapers creating an online product that is significantly different from its print product.

(1) New York Times: We love the general feeling of the NYT site, which is pleasing to the eye and easy to navigate. The site is loaded with great features, and the website is rumored to be dropping its annoying pay wall, TimesSelect, in the coming months.

‘Up In the Air’, ‘Avatar’ head Golden Globes contenders

Wednesday, December 16, 2009
BEVERLY HILLS: Futuristic epic “Avatar” and recession drama “Up In the Air” led the field as nominees for the 67’th Golden Globes were unveiled on Tuesday, signalling the start of Hollywood’s awards season.

Despite the fact that it has yet to be released in North America, Oscar-winner James Cameron’s groundbreaking “Avatar” scored four nominations including best drama and best director for the January 17 awards show. The nominations will fuel hype about “Avatar,” which has garnered stellar reviews following its world premiere in London last week. However, “Titanic” director Cameron’s big budget labour of love faces stiff competition from “Up In the Air,” the acclaimed story about a corporate downsizer played by George Clooney who starts to question his life. The film topped the list of nominees with six including best drama, a best actor nod for Clooney, and best director for Jason Reitman. It also earned acting nominations for Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick. The hopes of “Avatar” and “Up In the Air” could be threatened however by Iraq war drama “The Hurt Locker,” director Kathryn Bigelow’s gripping story about a maverick bomb disposal expert. As well as a best drama nomination, the film earned a best director nod for Bigelow, whose previous films include the cult Patrick Swayze surfing and bank-robbing action film “Point Break.

Other nominees for best drama include Quentin Tarantino’s blood-soaked World War Two revenge fantasy “Inglourious Basterds” and the gritty “Precious,” about the struggles of an obese, illiterate and abused teenager. Tarantino also earned a best director nomination for “Inglourious Basterds,” which picked up four nominations. However, there was a surprising best picture snub for “Invictus,” Clint Eastwood’s drama about former South African President Nelson Mandela’s efforts to unite the apartheid-scarred country around the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Although the film secured a best director nomination for Eastwood and a best actor nod for Morgan Freeman — who plays Mandela — the film was overlooked in the blue riband best drama category.

Gitmo detainees to be transfered to Illinois prison

Wednesday, December 16, 2009
WASHINGTON: The administration of President Barack Obama has decided to move some detainees from the US military jail in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to a prison in the northern state of Illinois, an official said on Tuesday. “Today, the administration will announce that the president has directed that the federal government proceed with the acquisition of the Thomson Correctional Centre in Thomson, Illinois to house federal inmates and a limited number of detainees from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba,” the official said.

“Closing the detention centre at Guantanamo is essential to protecting our national security and helping our troops by removing a deadly recruiting tool from the hands of al-Qaeda,” the same official added.

“Today’s announcement is an important step forward as we work to achieve our national security objectives.” The Chicago Tribune earlier reported that the facility would house between 35 and 90 detainees to be transferred from the controversial detention camp located on a US naval base in southeastern Cuba.

Thomson Correctional Centre, located across the Mississippi River from Iowa in a rural area, has remained essentially vacant since it was opened eight years ago due to budgetary constraints. It is protected by a 12-foot high exterior fence and a 15-foot interior fence, which includes a dual-sided electric stun barrier.

The federal government’s purchase of the prison could bring an estimated 2,340 to 3,250 direct and indirect jobs, with an economic benefit to the region of between $90 million and $.1 billion over four years, according to a preliminary administration analysis.

UK buys Chinooks to help troops in Afghanistan

Wednesday, December 16, 2009
LONDON: Britain said on Tuesday it would buy 22 Chinook transport helicopters to aid its military operations in Afghanistan but is expected to cut spending in other areas to balance a stretched defence budget.

One hundred British soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan this year and the Labour government has been criticised for failing to provide enough helicopters to transport its soldiers, leaving them vulnerable to attacks by roadside bombs. The Chinook is a twin-rotor, heavy-lift helicopter made by US company Boeing.

The order will expand Britain’s fleet of Chinooks to 70,with the first of the new batch coming off the production line in 2012 and entering service in 2013.

British forces took delivery of 14 Chinooks in 2001, but eight of them could not be used because software source code needed to certify their airworthiness was not supplied. Access to the code had not been specified as part of the contract. Those eight helicopters are expected to be in full service by the end of 2010 after modifications. Britain, which holds an election next year, is facing a record budget deficit this year of 178 billion pounds.

The BBC reported that a Royal Air Force base could be shut and thousands of defence jobs lost as the government rebalances its spending. Other media reports said there could be reductions in Britain’s force of Tornado and Harrier jets and a small cutback in the Royal Navy fleet.

A parliamentary spending watchdog warned on Tuesday the defence budget falls at least 6 billion pounds short of spending commitments on aircraft, ships and other equipment.

The National Audit Office (NAO) said the shortfall over the next decade would rise to 36 billion pounds — equivalent to a full year’s military budget — if defence spending was frozen.

“In either case the budget remains consistently unaffordable over the next 10 years,” the watchdog said. Closing the gap would require “bold action” in a strategic defence review planned after the 2010 general election, NAO head Amyas Morse said. “The Ministry of Defence has a multi-billion pound budgetary black hole which it is trying to fix with a ‘save now, pay later’ approach,” he said. The watchdog said defence chiefs were slowing major procurement projects to achieve short-term savings at the cost of greater overall expense.

Consultation in progress, NRO decision delayed

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court of Pakistan is yet to announce the decision on NRO cases as discussions are underway between judges of full court inside the committee room after the hearing of the case was completed.

Court’s decision is delayed due to the ongoing consultation while public is desperately awaiting the outcome.

Earlier, during hearing of petitions against the NRO, the chief justice said even parliament has no right to change the basic structure of the constitution.

“In accordance to oath, we are committed to safeguard the constitution,” he remarked.

Earlier, the chief justice has warned the NAB Chairman Naveed Ahsan about a stern action if something false detected in the list. He ordered the NAB Chairman to sign the list if it was correct. On the court’s order, he signed the list.

The court summoned the summary file of directives issued for the elimination Swiss cases when the hearing resumed on Wednesday. On the excuse of acting attorney general, the court summoned principal secretary and secretary law. Secretary law while presenting the file in the court said attorney general wrote the letter for withdrawal of cases on the directives of Asif Zardari’s lawyer Farooq H Naek that was opposed by the than law minister Zahid Hamid.

The court has expressed displeasure on acting attorney general and said he hide the truth. The principal secretary of president Salman Farooqi informed the court that cases files are not present in presidency. The files were in president’ camp office in Rawalpindi.

The court advisor Mian Allah Nawaz in his arguments termed the NRO as filthy law and said any, which is beneficial for some individuals, is illegal. Another court advisor Shaiq Usmani said there is no legal ground of giving amenity under NRO. President could only issue the ordinance, which will convert into law by the assembly.

In his remarks, chief justice said how assembly could declare corruption as legal. The judges in their remarks said NRO is against Quranic teachings and amenity could only be given to political cases.

The judges said that if it were a national reconciliation, then Baloch leaders and Altaf Hussain should have been called to the country. During the final stages of the hearing, Salman Raja, Akram Chaudhry, Dr Farooq Hussain, Shahid Orakzai and Abdul Hafiz Pirzada closed their arguments.

NEW YORK – Nick Jonas is used to performing in front of screaming fans who know all the words to their favorite Jonas Brothers songs.

Now his new band, Nick Jonas & The Administration, is getting ready to perform as the house band for the Critics' Choice Movie Awards on Jan. 15 in Los Angeles. The band will be expected to not only entertain but also keep the pace of the show moving.

"I'm excited and honored. ... We'll be performing a lot of covers. Intros and outros to the commercials. I think we have about 25 songs to learn," Jonas said in a recent interview.

The 17-year-old singer-musician calls his band a side project. They will record an album, Jonas said, but he will continue to record music with his brothers Kevin and Joe of the Jonas Brothers.

Since the awards show will be about movies, Jonas said his favorite film of 2009 was "The Invention of Lying," which he described as "funny" and "fantastic."

"I love Ricky Gervais," he said.

He is also a big fan of George Clooney.

"I don't know if he'll be there (in the audience at the awards show) but I just saw `Up in the Air' and thought it was great," Jonas said.

The awards are presented by the Broadcast Film Critics Association.

Climate talks deadlocked as clashes erupt outside

COPENHAGEN – Police fired pepper spray and beat protesters with batons outside the U.N. climate conference Wednesday, as disputes inside left major issues unresolved just two days before world leaders hope to sign a historic agreement to fight global warming.

Hundreds of protesters were trying to disrupt the 193-nation conference, the latest action in days of demonstrations to demand "climate justice" — firm steps to combat global warming. Police said 230 protesters were detained.

Inside the cavernous convention hall, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, among the first leaders to address the assembly, echoed the protesters' sentiments: "If the climate was a bank, a capitalist bank, they would have saved it."

Earlier, behind closed doors, negotiators dealing with core issues debated until just before dawn without setting new goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions or for financing poorer countries' efforts to cope with coming climate change, key elements of any deal.

"I regret to report we have been unable to reach agreement," John Ashe of Antigua, chairman of one negotiating group, told the conference.

In those overnight talks, the American delegation apparently objected to a proposed text it felt might bind the United States prematurely to reducing greenhouse gas emissions before Congress acts on the required legislation. U.S. envoys insisted, for example, on replacing the word "shall" with the conditional "should."

"A lot of things are in play," said Fred Krupp of the U.S. Environmental Defense Fund. "This is the normal rhythm of international negotiations."

Hundreds of protesters marched on the suburban Bella Center, where lines of Danish riot police waited in protective cordons. Some demonstrators said they wanted to take over the global conference and turn it into a "people's assembly." As they approached police lines, they were hit with pepper spray, and TV pictures showed a man being pushed from a police van's roof and struck with a baton by an officer.

Tens of thousands rallied in the Danish capital last weekend, demonstrating growing public awareness of the worldwide danger of ever-rising temperatures. Scientists say global warming will lead to the extinction of plant and animal species, the flooding of coastal areas from rising seas, more extreme weather, more drought and diseases spreading more widely.

The Copenhagen talks so far have been marked by sharp disagreements between China and the United States, and between rich and poor nations. Still unresolved are the questions of emissions targets for industrial countries, billions of dollars a year in funding for poor countries to contend with global warming, and verifying the actions of emerging powers like China to ensure that promises are kept.

Addressing the full conference for the European Union, Swedish Environment Minister Andreas Carlgren, urged the U.S. and China to raise their emissions-reduction targets.

"The world needs more and we are confident that you have the ability to deliver more," he said of the two countries.

After nine days of largely unproductive talks, the lower-level delegates were to hand off the disputes to environment ministers in the two-week conference's critical second phase. Connie Hedegaard, a former Danish climate minister, resigned from the conference presidency to allow Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen to preside as a higher-ranking official at the formal Wednesday-Friday segment involving heads of state and government. She was to continue overseeing closed-door negotiations.

Organizers still hope to break deadlocks that threaten to leave the meeting with no major accomplishments to be presented to President Barack Obama, Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao and more than 110 other world leaders arriving for Friday's finale.

The lack of progress disheartened many, including small island states threatened by rising seas.

"We are extremely disappointed," Ian Fry of the tiny Pacific nation of Tuvalu said on the conference floor. "I have the feeling of dread we are on the Titanic and sinking fast. It's time to launch the lifeboats."

Others were far from abandoning ship. "Obviously there are things we are concerned about, but that is what we have to discuss," Sergio Barbosa Serra, Brazil's climate ambassador, told The Associated Press. "I would like to think we can get a deal, a good and fair deal."

Governments had weeks ago given up hope of concluding a finished treaty at Copenhagen and aimed instead at establishing a framework, through decisions here, for negotiating more formal agreements next year.

Much of the uncertainty in the Copenhagen talks stems from how slowly the first U.S. legislation to cap carbon dioxide emissions is moving through Congress. Passage of a U.S. climate change bill is expected no earlier than next spring — and many other nations are unwilling to make their final commitments until the U.S. does.

A sponsor of that legislation, U.S. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., visiting the conference, sounded undiscouraged about the fitful negotiations. "My sense is we can get this done," he told the AP.

The draft texts being debated behind closed doors hinge on four key issues, with negotiating views generally divided between rich nations and developing ones:

• Emissions. Industrialized nations are under pressure to cut back even more on emissions of carbon dioxide and other global-warming gases, while major developing countries such as China and India are being pressed to rein in emissions growth. Environmentalists and poorer nations say richer countries should reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent or more by 2020, compared with 1990 levels, to avoid serious climate damage. The European Union has pledged 20 percent, and possibly 30 percent. The U.S. has offered only a 3 percent to 4 percent cut.

• Financing. Richer nations have discussed a "prompt-start" package of $10 billion a year for three years to help developing nations adjust to the impact of global warming and switch to clean energy. Developing nations want to see commitments by wealthy nations for years more of long-term climate aid financing. Expert studies say hundreds of billions of dollars will be needed each year, and the developing nations are trying to establish stable revenue sources, such as a global aviation tax.

• Monitoring. The U.S. and developed nations want some kind of international verification of emissions actions by developing nations. China, India and others are resisting what they consider potential intrusions on their sovereignty.

• Legal Form. For Europe, Japan and other developed nations, new, deeper emissions cuts will take the form of an extension of quotas under the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The U.S., which rejected Kyoto and wants to remain outside it, likely to be included in a separate package that also deals with major developing countries. The level of legal obligation on each "track" may vary, particularly since the big developing countries — China and India — do not want to be bound by any international treaty to carry out their pledges of emission cuts. They prefer voluntary goals.

The war in Iraq

On March 19, 2003, President George Bush announced that the U.S. war against Iraq had begun. Searches for Iraq, its leader Saddam Hussein, and the previous Gulf War had been growing as the war’s build-up progressed, but the initial air strikes, the search for weapons of mass destruction and anti-war protests soon became the focus.

In April, the dramatic rescue of Private Jessica Lynch captivated Search … as did the shocking revelation that the alleged heroic event was actually staged. Iraq remained a top search throughout the decade, including the toppling of the Saddam statue in Baghdad; the deaths of Saddam's sons, Uday and Qusay; the beheading of American contractor Nicholas Berg; the capture, trial and hanging of Saddam Hussein; battles in Fallujah; the Abu Ghraib prison controversy; and the injury and recovery of ABC newsman Bob Woodruff.

A Decade of Search

A lot of news happens in a decade, and as we prepare to close this one, there will be plenty of lists about the top stories from the last 10 years. This is not one of those lists. These are the stories you told us you were interested in … by searching for them. From the gravely serious to the supremely silly, we present a decade of news you couldn't get enough of.

The terrorist attacks on Sept 11, 2001, left a nation stunned, mourning and looking for answers. No one will ever forget the horrific images of airplanes crashing into the World Trade Center's North and South towers, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field. In the days and weeks that followed, people turned to the Web to find timelines of what happened, photos and videos of the attacks and information about who was responsible. Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida became household names.

Eventually, people began looking for sources of inspiration and healing. Images of the twin towers falling were replaced with one of ground zero's "Tribute in Light." Online memorials and dedications to the 2,976 victims became places of remembrance while people the world over searched for ways to help victims and their families. Iconic moments from "Saturday Night Live" (Lorne Michaels: "Can we be funny?" NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani: "Why start now?"), David Letterman and "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" gave people a reason to smile again.

God of War 1

Though I’m not quite yet finished, I have recently been playing the two current God of War games and I have to say I’m having a blast. Though the game can be incredibly frustrating at points it is just enough for me to feverishly keep trying and not give up, while also not giving me an aneurysm. But that’s not what this post is about. The gameplay to the story is fantastic. The use of old Greek mythology is also very creative and fun. What’s lacking from this otherwise stellar story is pathos, and pathos makes all the difference in a story.

Kratos is the character you play as in the story so lets go into a little backstory. Kratos is this bloodthirsty spartan army leader when he takes on some barbarians and his army is decimated. Right before the leader of the barbarian horde is going to enact the final blow on Kratos, Kratos calls out to Ares and says he’ll be his servant if he can deliver him from death. Ares kills everybody except Kratos and his Spartans.

Kratos is now the leader of Spartans under the command of Ares. He goes about killing pretty much anybody and everybody. Eventually this catches up with him and though an old oracle warns him, in his blind fury Kratos murders his wife and child. He then feels bad and swears not to be Ares servant anymore. Ares points out that he was just trying to get Kratos to be a better warrior but KRatos is pretty set on getting revenge. In fact unquenchable revenge is ultimately what powers the main character and the story.

Kratos then becomes a servant to the other gods and sets out on a quest to kill Ares. After you kill every monster and person (regardless of they’re innocence) Kratos eventually kills Ares and becomes the new god of war.

The second game opens with the rest of the gods pissed at Kratos because he’s being a complete douchebag like Ares before him, sending out armies to destroy everything. The gods take away his powers and Zeus delivers the kill blow, however the Titans intercede and blah blah blah.

Perfect World International

This game in my opinion, really isn't the best game out there at least for me anyway. I mean it has some of the best customization in a free MMO I ever saw. You could customize down to the colors of your skin. I even saw pictures of people literally making themselves in the game. However, what really disappointed me in the game is just the simple fact that gameplay was rather bland. After awhile the game just got extremely boring. Just the combat system for me was slow and dull. Plus it also takes a bit to level up. If you could get by all of that, it would be perfect for you. Otherwise, I might stay away from this.

Soul of the Ultimate Nation

As far as I'm concerned. This is the best free MMO I've ever played. The only thing it really lacks is the fact that it has pretty much no customization otherwise its perfect in my opinion. The gameplay mechanics are amazing. You can also level really quickly. There has been a few days I've gained 8-10 levels in a day. Every each level you gain, you get 5 points that you can budget to either your 2 skills (in my case since I have an elementalist, its Ether or Circle) which you can get more spells and abilities. Or you can simply just post put them into your characters stats (Strength, Agility, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma, etc). So you have so much leeway on how you can create your characters. You also have to up these stats in order to upgrade your equipment too. The game is also one of the prettiest free MMOs I've seen too. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Runes of Magic

Okay. This game. In my opinion, this really isn't worth playing. That is if you prefer your MMOs with a lot action in them. The customization in the game is amazing. You even customize down to a female characters bust size and your character's hair color. Even other facial features like facial scars. You can even change their skin to multiple colors too! What was the biggest let down though in this game is the fact of the clunky controls. They're just so weird feeling. They aren't like other MMOs whatsoever. Also the combat is really really dull. First off, the combat sequences, they're extremely slow. Its like you do a single hit on the enemy every 3-5 seconds. In my opinion, it really shouldn't be that way at all for an MMO. Also, the enemies are so hard to kill. When I was just a level 1, it felt like a good 5 minutes for me to kill just a simple dinky creature. If I were you, I'd just stay away from this game. I was so bored I couldn't even get past level 2.

Wanted: Weapons of Fate

After seeing the first look featurette of this game on the Wanted Blu Ray disc, I honestly thought I wouldn’t look again. Easily pigeonholed as a generic movie game, Wanted; Weapons of Fate might be actually be cool. But I tell you this, once you successfully curve your first bullet it’s definitely a “boo yah son!” type of moment. Sometimes the camera will give you a slow motion around the corner shot and others you will just see the bullet whizz around the corner. You can tell your bullet hit because the foe will stumble into the open clutching his freshly made wound allowing for an easy second kill shot. The demo takes place on an airplane but the game itself is set 5 hours after the events in the movie. The gameplay relies heavily on a Gears of War type of cover system that seems to work well. Blindfire and bullet time are present as well as movable cover but there doesn’t seem to be much for melee moves at the time of demo as I felt like I say the same bloody knee to the face animation over and over. Hopefully Wanted: Weapons of Fate will keep it fresh for the duration so we don’t get bored. The curving bullet aspect is “killer” and a ton of fun right from the start and I suggest you give it a try yourself. Wanted: Weapons of Fate is set for a March 24th release on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

Big Surf Island Priced

“Big Surf Island,” the latest DLC pack for Burnout Paradise, releases this Thursday on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. The pack will add a new area to Paradise City, accessible via the ocean-side bridge in East Downtown Paradise. Big Surf Island will be roughly the same size as Downtown Paradise, but will contain new gameplay features.

“Big Surf Island” will cost you 1000 MS Points on the XBL side of things, and $12.99 on PSN. No word on the exact size of the download, but I’d imagine it’ll be quite large — likely close to one gigabite total. So clear up some room on your hard drives, folks, and get ready to burn some rubber, Burnout-style. If you’re on PSN, look for me on Big Surf Island. Say hello even.

By the way, the PC version will be out around September, and will likely feature support for more players, along with tweaked gameplay to appeal to the more hardcore PC crowd.

Resident Evil Director's Cut

As we and others in the gaming news biz pointed out once or twice, a slew of original PS1 hits — including Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil: Director’s Cut — are rumored to be coming Stateside soon. Thankfully, this is one of those lovely moments when I can say that we were (mostly, at this time anyway) right.

Resident Evil: Director’s Cut hits the PlayStation Network in North America on Thursday, May 28. This extended edition of the first Resident Evil experience will cost you $9.99 and a little download time. But oh my, folks, the cost is most definitely worth it.

If you’re wondering OK, so you say it’s worth it — why? Well, curious reader, because you’ll get the definitive version of the PlayStation 1 classic. The main game is largely the same, but you’ll get random camera angles (which differ from those in the original version), new costumes, and… OK, so there’s not much else that’s truly different. But hey, you can use analog control in this version.

Evil Dead: Regeneration

After three different movies and four different video games, you can't help but feel a little sorry for the hero of the Evil Dead franchise, Ash. No matter what he does, those pesky deadites never seem to leave him alone. In Evil Dead Regeneration, Ash finds himself arrested, convicted of murder, and sentenced to Sunny Meadows, an institute for the criminally insane. As if that wasn't bad enough, the head of the institute, Dr. Vingo Reinhard, has decided to use the dark powers of the infamous Necronomicon Ex Mortis to further his own research, resulting in the resurrection of a new breed of deadites. Luckily for the rest of the world, there's one person in the Sunny Meadows institution just crazy enough to go toe-to-toe with the deadites and stop the mad doctor's plans.

Ash isn't fighting the forces of evil alone though. This time around, Ash is forced to team up with a three-foot tall wise-cracking empathy, who just so happens to be one of the undead. Ash can use his new sidekick to help out in tight situations, such as accessing areas he couldn't otherwise reach. Of course, Ash can also get creative with his new "friend" kicking him at enemies like a soccer ball, or lighting him on fire like a mini torch. The interaction between the two characters is a riot, as something fans are sure to get a kick out of.

Ash has a variety of weapons at his disposal, including shotguns, pistols, flame throwers, and of course, his signature chainsaw. Combat is fairly easy to get the hang of, and fighting my way through the waves of undead felt a lot more natural than it has in any of the previous Evil Dead games. Ash's new sidekick can also be pretty versatile, as well. At one point in the game, I took the little guy through a hidden path to sneak up on a particularly large deadite. Once behind the creature, the little guy hopped on his back and rode the creature piggyback through the graveyard, trashing all of the undead skeletons unfortunate enough to be in the way.

Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick

This wasn’t the best game of 2003 by a longshot. ‘03 was a banner year for the industry with Call of Duty, Mario Kart Double Dash, and Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time all hitting shelves. Boomstick was flawed by comparison, but I had spent much of my senior year of college interning with a small ad/sound production studio, and had the great pleasure of working with Ash himself, Bruce Campbell.

Evil Dead: Hail to the King

Based on the movie series starring Bruce Campbell, Evil Dead: Hail to the King features a mix of action, puzzles, and suspense. Set eight years after the third film, you are Ash, who is being drawn back to the cabin in the woods. So grab your boomstick (shotgun) and chainsaw because it is time to save the world again from the forces of evil. Gameplay allows Ash to attack separately with weapons in both his left and right hands. There are over 20 enemies to combat in a variety of dark settings such as the cabin, cellar, and bridge. Bruce Campbell also lends his voice to the game for some humorous one-liners.

True Crime: Streets of LA

When Grand Theft Auto 3 was released, we saw a new standard for action games. Having the ability for totally free-roaming over a city was one of the most fun things to do nowadays in gaming everyone knows about it. Now, with True Crime: Streets of LA, we see it again but is it better? Comparing the two would be a pretty difficult task, but wouldnt it be more fun to roam around town as an undercover cop who CANT get arrested other than a wanted mob who CAN?

Hell has been unleashed on the City of Angels by merciless gangs. The only hope to restore the order is an out-of-control ex-cop whose unconventional methods leave him rejected by the police and feared by criminals. Drive, fight and shoot your way through 240 square miles of LA. True Crime: Streets of LA is an all-out action fest from beginning to end.

Grand Theft Auto IV

A video game review, by practice, usually shows one person’s critique of a particular video game based on a predetermined value set, and is usually followed by some sort of grade. Using these guidelines one can see how different games stack up against each other, and whether you should consider buying it. When a game called Grand Theft Auto IV came out all norms of game scoring seemed to be tossed out the window. There were more than a handful of review sites that listed the game as “the best game ever made” and literally broke down their own scoring systems giving the game insane scores like 11/10. I guess it’s as Nigel Tufnel says in the movie Spinal Tap.

In the film, Nigel pointed out to director Marty DiBergi that the settings on Tap’s Marshall amps could extend beyond the standard 10 mark. Nigel stated "You see, most blokes will be playing at 10. You’re on 10, all the way up, all the way up...Where can you go from there? Nowhere. What we do, is if we need that extra push over the cliff...Eleven. One louder."

So there you go, when you want to invalidate your scoring system, just take it up to eleven! 11 means it's better.
