A passing note on Emraan Hashmi…

I know a lot of people don’t like Emraan Hashmi, some would even go as far as to say they “hate” him and considering him a “talentless” and “worthless” actor however I personally have a great weakness for him ever since his debut in FOOTPATH and consider him terribly underrated; box-office and acting alike!

Granted, after the success of his second film MURDER he was slotted with the “serial killer” image, and this is something Hashmi leveraged to it’s ultimate potential with films like TUMSAA NAHIN DEHAA, ZEHER, AASHIQ BANAYA AAPNE, JAWANI DIWANI, AKSAR, DIL DIYA HAI etc, however in amongst all the crap I do feel Emraan also delivered some worthy performances.

As far as acting goes, Emraans best performance in my view is AWARAPAN followed closely by JANNAT. With AWARAPAN he fitted in to the Bhatt prototype of a “killer with a heart of gold” to a hilt. A silent, brooding performance which required mainly on his facials, this is a performance where Hashmi hit all the right notes consistently and proved he isn’t merely a “serial kisser”. Sadly, the film failed to work at the box-office.

Following that was JANNAT, in many ways a mish-mash and amalgamation of Bhatt’s own SADAK, NAAM and KABZAA. Here Hashmi again fitted in to the Bhatt mould of a bad-boy with aplomb. Playing the addict convincingly he carried the entire film on his and carried it through at the box-office too.

Even in GANGSTER, I was extremely surprised by his turn as a sharp and murky cop who ends up as the films antagonist. His supporting turn in KALYUG was likeable and he played a massy role to the gallery with panache.

As far as the box-office is concerned, Emraan has had 19 releases so far, of which 8 have been successes. As a solo star, Emraan has no doubt found his fan-base with back-to-back successes in JANNAT and RAAZ 2. Granted he’s always been backed by a “hit” soundtrack, however I’m surprised a lot of people give all the credit to the soundtracks in his movies? Sounds a tad ridiculous…
